OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNISTION is a method of recognizing typewritten, printed and sometimes handwritten text in images, and extracting the text into a digital file format. It is a common way to take text on hard-copy (paper) and make it electronic, for easy storing, archiving, searching, editing, publishing, converting to another language, reading aloud (text-to-speech), and analyzing. It can also be used for data entry (e.g. by extracting data from printed records, statements, mail, and so on). How is this digital extraction possible? OCR scanning is based on computer vision (basically, how computers ‘see’ and recognize letters), artificial intelligence (how adept the computer is, compared to a human), and patterns recognition (how computers identify and compare similar objects).
